Blekinge Adventures – Sustainability Policy
1. Introduction
Blekinge Adventures operates within tourism and destination development in Blekinge, with an overarching goal of contributing to the region’s long-term sustainable development. Our sustainability policy is based on the principles of environmental, social, and economic sustainability, in line with international frameworks such as the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and Good Travel Seal. This policy serves both as a guiding document for our operations and as a framework for continuous evaluation and improvement.
2. Environmental Sustainability
2.1 Protection of Nature and Biodiversity
Blekinge’s archipelago and inland areas contain high natural and cultural values, as well as sensitive ecosystems. Our operations are conducted with respect for conservation regulations, cultural heritage, and local community conditions, and in close cooperation with relevant authorities and landowners. We:
- Respect bird protection areas, seal protection zones, nature reserves, cultural sites, and other seasonal or location-specific restrictions.
- Follow the principles of Leave No Trace and inform all guests about the rights and responsibilities of public access, as well as local regulations relating to natural and cultural environments.
- Recommend routes, trails, and destinations that minimize wear on sensitive natural environments and demonstrate respect for cultural heritage, local traditions, and living coastal communities. For nature-based activities such as kayaking, hiking, or cycling, we may refer guests to alternative locations to protect particularly vulnerable areas.
2.2 Climate and Energy
We work to gradually reduce our climate impact by designing and packaging our experiences in a sustainable way. This includes:
- Developing and offering packages where activities, transport, accommodation, and meals are combined to minimize carbon emissions. Nature-based activities such as kayaking, hiking, or cycling are prioritized where appropriate.
- Prioritizing digital systems for booking, communication, and administration, thereby reducing the need for transport, paper use, and physical meetings.
- Collaborating with regional stakeholders to integrate climate-smart travel options into our packages, such as public transport, cycling infrastructure, shared transport solutions, and local suppliers with a strong sustainability profile.
3. Social Sustainability
3.1 Safety, Health, and Security
We place strong emphasis on ensuring a safe and secure experience for all participants, whether they take part in a single activity or a packaged experience. This includes:
- Continuous risk assessments for all activities and packages, including evaluation of weather, wind, sea conditions, and other factors affecting safety and experience.
- Trained staff with competence in first aid, CPR, water safety, and relevant safety procedures for nature- and culture-based experiences.
- Clear and transparent safety information provided to participants prior to activities, including practical details, expected physical requirements, equipment needs, and environmental or weather-related conditions.
- Equipment that meets current safety standards, which is regularly inspected and adapted to the specific content of each package.
- Responsible packaging of experiences, ensuring that all components such as activities, transport, timing, partners, and any included meals are planned to minimize risks, avoid overload, and provide a coherent and safe customer experience.
- Cooperation with certified and experienced partners, with clear requirements for safety, quality, and hospitality across all elements included in our packages.
3.2 Local Community Benefits and Collaboration
Blekinge Adventures views tourism as a driver for local development and actively works to strengthen the region’s social and economic sustainability by:
- Collaborating with local businesses, accommodation providers, cultural actors, and food producers, and integrating them into our packages to ensure local industries benefit from visitor flows and can grow sustainably.
- Promoting local value retention by prioritizing partners with strong local ties, small-scale operations, and sustainability ambitions, thereby contributing directly to employment and economic stability in Blekinge.
- Developing products and experiences that reflect and strengthen Blekinge’s identity as a sustainable coastal and cultural destination, for example, through visits to local artisans, cultural heritage sites, nature guides, accommodation providers, and food experiences connected to regional traditions.
- Packaging experiences in a way that creates added value for both guests and the local community, through coordinated resource use, reduced unnecessary pressure on local environments, and a more balanced seasonal visitor flow.
- Strengthening local networks and long-term collaborations by developing packages together with businesses, associations, and tourism stakeholders to jointly enhance Blekinge’s attractiveness and sustainability.
4. Economic Sustainability
4.1 Year-Round Perspective and Resilience
To strengthen long-term economic stability in the region, we actively work to spread visitor flows across multiple seasons and reduce dependence on peak summer months. A year-round perspective enables sustainable growth, reduces vulnerability, and improves conditions for local businesses. We do this by:
- Developing activities and cultural and nature-based experiences suitable for spring, summer, and autumn, and when appropriate also winter, adapted to seasonal conditions to reduce pressure on sensitive sites.
- Creating package solutions and collaborations that make Blekinge attractive year-round by combining accommodation, food, transport, culture, and nature-based activities into cohesive offers.
- Using knowledge-based decision-making through systematic collection of customer feedback, environmental scanning, and cooperation in regional destination development.
- Supporting more balanced regional income distribution by actively directing demand across seasons and geographic areas, benefiting a broader range of local actors and creating more stable employment.
- Planning season-extending initiatives together with partners, such as events, guided tours, cultural programs, and themed weeks.
4.2 Circular and Resource-Efficient Operations
Blekinge Adventures actively works to promote a circular and resource-efficient tourism sector in the region by:
- Prioritizing rental and repair of equipment over new purchases, and collaborating with local workshops and service providers to strengthen the regional circular economy.
- Reducing single-use items and promoting reuse by using durable materials in activities, setting requirements for partners to minimize waste, and offering sustainable options for meals and transport included in packages.
- Integrating circular principles into our packages by selecting suppliers and activities that work with resource-efficient processes, local production, seasonal ingredients, and recycled materials.
- Collaborating with local actors in sustainable food production and circular economy initiatives, such as farms, fishers, food artisans, cultural organizations, and outdoor activity providers.
- Informing guests on how they can contribute to circular consumption during their visit through conscious choices, reuse, and support of local products and services.
5. Sustainable Transport and Accessibility
Transport accounts for a significant share of tourism-related emissions. Blekinge Adventures therefore works actively to reduce travel-related emissions and promote sustainable mobility by:
- Informing guests about sustainable travel options to and within Blekinge, including train and bus connections, cycling routes, and regional archipelago transport.
- Adapting meeting points and activity flows to public transport networks to reduce car dependency.
- Encouraging car-free visits through packages that are fully accessible via public transport, walking, or cycling.
- Collaborating with regional transport providers and destination networks to promote low-emission mobility solutions.
- Integrating sustainable travel considerations into customer communication and trip planning.
6. Visitor Management and Responsible Destination Development
To ensure sustainable use of natural and cultural environments, we apply strategic visitor management by:
- Planning routes and experiences with regard to ecological values, cultural heritage, and visitor pressure.
- Adjusting group sizes and program design to minimize wear and ensure safety and quality.
- Promoting geographic and seasonal dispersion of activities.
- Integrating visitor management into package planning in cooperation with local stakeholders.
- Providing continuous guidance to guests on safe and sustainable behavior based on seasonal and environmental conditions.
- Collaborating with regional and local actors in tourism, conservation, and cultural heritage.
7. Quality Development, Training, and Certification
